Because They’re Funny Comedy Festival (BTF) is a dynamic comedy event created to showcase both today’s leading comedians and the brightest new voices from across the country. The 2025 BTF will take place October 10-12 in Washington, D.C.’s vibrant Wharf district.

Now in its third year, the festival is dedicated to propelling a new generation of stand-up talent to stardom, while also celebrating established comedians and promoting comedy-driven film and television content that reflects a wide range of perspectives—all while positioning Washington, D.C. as a premier entertainment hub.

Curated to appeal to both comedy fans and entertainment industry insiders, BTF presents a high-energy lineup featuring headline performances, showcases for emerging talent, film and television screenings, engaging comedy conversations, and social events. Festival programming will take place at premier venues along The Wharf, including The Anthem and Union Stage.

At the heart of the festival is its signature event—the “Breakout Comedian of the Year” competition. Drawing hundreds of submissions from across the country, the competition culminates with six finalists performing live at BTF for a $10,000 grand prize and the opportunity to earn representation from a leading Hollywood talent agency.

Named one of USA Today’s Top 10 New Festivals, BTF made a powerful debut with more than 5,200 attendees in its inaugural year—and continues to grow as a premier national platform for both established stars and fresh comedic voices.

BTF is a property of NICE CROWD, a leading live events company founded by Nicole and Jeff Friday. The festival is presented in partnership with Events DC, the official convention and sports authority for the District of Columbia.
